Famed Coach Joe paterno’s Eyeglasses Auction for $9,000

Joe Paterno recently donated his thick lensed eye glasses to Penn State Public Broadcasting to offer during their 18th annual fundraising event. Paterno was Penn State’s much loved football coach for many years and wore the eyeglasses since his first game there in 1966.

The glasses were bid on byMichelle and Kevin Coppolla, both Penn State grads and football fans. They have mounted the glasses in a shadow box with a color photo of Paterno. The spectacles will be displayed alongside numerous other pieces of Penn State memorabilia. So why pay $9000 for an old pair of eyeglasses? Michelle Coppola was stated, “We think Joe Paterno is one of the greatest football coaches of all time and part of the iconic image of Penn State. This just sounded like a good opportunity to have memorabilia of Penn State and something of Joe that is one of a kind,” she said. “We were pretty determined to have them. They are worth every penny for us.”

Why the Uproar for Enforcing Vision Testing for Drivers?

In 1977 New Jersey state passed a law requiring drivers to have their vision tested every 10 years to renew their driver’s license. The law has never been enforced. The current system requires a basic exam at the DMV when originally applying for your license and only requires a 20/50 reading in one eye to pass. After this exam there is no vision monitoring.

Suddenly there has been talk of actually enforcing the law making the roads safe for everyone. I for one would like to know the the person barreling down upon me on the freeway or passing me in a tunnel is able to see, however the public outcry in New jersey seems to indicate not everybody feels this is important.

I disagree, I feel that not only is vision monitoring of utmost importance but would prefer that drivers can actually see signs in front of them and maybe even possess a bit of depth perception.

Please consider this next time you pull a pair of old eyeglasses on, when was your script last tested. If it’s been a while consider that perhaps you have accommodated to changes in your vision and can’t even notice that it is time for an update.
